Your cell phone can make you sick!

October 31, 2017 | Dr. Shannon Turek

A recent study found more than 17,000 bacterial gene copies on cell phones. Some of these pathogens found on phones included Streptococcus, MRSA and even E. coli.

1) Wash your hands regularly.
2) Avoid bringing your phone into the bathroom with you.
3) Get adjusted, because adjustments help boost your immune system!

Chiropractic Myth

October 27, 2017 | Dr. Shannon Turek

Once you start going to a chiropractor, you have to keep going for the rest of your life.

I hear this comment frequently, and it is partially true. Going to the chiropractor is very similar to going to the dentist. Your dentist will tell you to continue routine dental care for preventative measures.

Same is true for chiropractic care, your spine is exposed to a lot of wear and tear such as walking, sitting, lifting, sleeping and bending so routine checkups help correct any existing issues and help prevent future musculoskeletal issues and injuries from occurring.

If you wish to maintain good spinal health and optimize the function of your neuromusculoskeletal system, then you should continue going to your chiropractor. Chiropractic care is part of a wellness lifestyle along with exercising and eating healthy. So the answer is no, you do not have to continue going to your chiropractor for the rest of your life, but many people do because they enjoy the long term benefits of feeling better, moving better and having the ability to live life to the fullest potential.

8 Ways to Sneak Exercise in as a Family

October 23, 2017 | Dr. Shannon Turek

The key to getting the recommended 60 minutes of aerobic exercise every day is to make exercise fun for kids and for yourself. Running in place on a treadmill or sitting on a stationary bike is usually boring for adults and is unlikely to make your child excited for exercise.

The key is to sneak in exercise as a family and make it FUN.

It will prepare your kids for a lifetime of physical activity and will help you stay in shape as a bonus.

  1. Family Dance Party (this is my son's favorite)
  2. Take a walk together
  3. Have an activity day
  4. Take breaks from TV
  5. Play Tag
  6. Ride a bike or walk to school
  7. Garden together

Tips on Preventing Low Back Pain

October 16, 2017 | Dr. Shannon Turek

Low back pain is the single leading cause of disability worldwide, according to the Global Burden of Disease 2010

You can prevent low back pain by following these tips:

  1. 1) Maintain a healthy diet and weight.
  2. 2) Remain active—under the supervision of your doctor of chiropractic.
  3. 3) Avoid prolonged inactivity or bed rest.
  4. 4) Warm up or stretch before exercising or physical activities, such as gardening.
  5. 5) Maintain proper posture.
  6. 6) Wear comfortable, low-heeled shoes.
  7. 7) Sleep on a mattress of medium firmness to minimize any curve in your spine.
  8. 8) Lift with your knees, keep the object close to your body, and do not twist when lifting.
  9. 9) Quit smoking. Smoking impairs blood flow, resulting in oxygen and nutrient deprivation to spinal tissues.
  10. 10) Work with your doctor of chiropractic to ensure that your computer workstation is ergonomically correct.
